As for our system here, the sūtras explain them to be root downfalls, and the Victor’s child, Śāntideva, who is a reliable source who comments on the sūtras, explains them as root downfalls too. In particular, he does so by combining both meanings stated from the Ākāśagarbha Sūtra and the Bodhisattva Grounds, so it should be understood in just this way. The new translation is its revision, made by Tilakakalaśa and Loden Sherab, which is in the Tibetan canon. See Tatz, Asanga’s Chapter on Ethics, 286n262. says: “These root downfalls are easily taken up and upheld, and should be expressed in a concise verse according to the claims of one.” So through integrating both of these traditions[p.224]The Great Hum

together, he says that the downfalls are genuine. Also, since commentaries like the great commentary on the Way of the Bodhisattva and Kalyāṇadeva’s commentary also explain them as root downfalls, they should be asserted that way without a doubt. This way of combining these two traditions into one is also stated in Shang Sharawa Yönten Drak’s Memorandum on the Stages of the Path.
