English

The object is monastics who are practicing the Dharma. With an intention to harm them, it is to cause them to relinquish their attention to what is conducive to calm abiding and special insight. Also, it is to legislate bad laws that proliferate afflictions. Further, it is a root downfall to give, with an attitude motivated by anger, the provisions of three or fewer fully ordained monks—not four, and not sublime beings—who are on retreat and are striving to relinquish material possessions. The endeavor is to take what is not given and give it to reciters. It is a root downfall to do this. If the material possessions are taken from a sublime being or a spiritual community, then it is a defeat that is the first root downfall; so it must not be this.
