English

Likewise, inspired by a motivation of jealousy toward any acquisitions, esteem, or acclaim of others, it is also a defeat to criticize and slander them falsely, saying that they do not follow the Mahāyāna, lack a disregard for acquisitions and esteem, and so on. Also, it is said that it is fine here that praise and criticism are separated out as two defeats, and that there is attachment to either acquisitions or esteem; it is similar to before.431See Tsongkhapa, Highway to Awakening, 55b; English trans. in Tatz, Asanga’s Chapter on Ethics, 180. Praise and criticism are what a sūtra calls “speaking with a forked tongue,” and what is said seems to be necessarily understood as a lie. 432See, for instance, Atiśa, Great Anthology of Sūtras (Mahāsūtrasamuccaya, D. 3961), 160a.
