| English | The objects of disparagement are those in the “Vehicle of Trainees.” This refers to the vehicles of the śrāvakas and the pratyekabuddhas, or to the Hīnayāna in general. How denigration is done is to disparage them by declaring that no matter how much training is done in those vehicles, all the afflictions, such as attachment, can never be relinquished. Also, it is a downfall to maintain that the Dharma of realization of the śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas is unable to free one from cyclic existence. To denigrate simply in this way is a root downfall, but it is said that it is not necessary for the component to be there that is “to bring another to maintain this as well.” “To bring another to maintain this” refers to denigrating in this way and thereby committing a root downfall not only for the one who says this but for the one to whom it is spoken as well. This is the case when the one to whom it is spoken has the bodhisattva vow and they adopt this view through the condition of being brought to maintain this kind of view. Thereby a defeat is committed through that root downfall. |
