| English | What is destroyed is a village “and so forth,” which includes any of the four residences: villages, cities, countrysides, [136] as well as countries. The motivation comes from an afflictive intention to destroy them. The endeavor is to cause their destruction by any means. The first five defeats, stealing the property of the Three Jewels and so on, are downfalls of a king. Also, the Anthology of Sūtras cites the Ākāśagarbha Sūtra saying that the sixth, destroying a residence, is the second of a minister. It also says that stealing the property of the Three Jewels up to and including the five heinous deeds with immediate retribution are also downfalls of a minister. These “are said by the Victor to be root downfalls.”422Śāntideva, Anthology of Training, 43a; English trans. in Goodman, The Training Anthology of Śāntideva, 71. |
