| English | You might think, “It is a contradiction to say that forsaking either the vast or the profound of the Mahāyāna is a misdeed, while saying that forsaking the Hīnayāna Word is a root downfall. This is because forsaking the former is much worse than forsaking the latter.” There is no problem because in the case of both the higher and lower vows, it is not determined that a worse fault is a greater infraction (bcas pa) and that a lesser fault is a lesser infraction. For example, it is a defeat (pham pa) if you lie, saying, “I saw a deity,” and it is a remaining infraction (lhag mar bcas pa) if you cause a schism in the spiritual community. Some people explain it this way. There are three defeats within forsaking the Mahāyāna [2nd, 8th, 15th]. Here, the root downfall of forsaking the Mahāyāna and the root downfall of forsaking the Dharma in the Bodhisattva Grounds have the same meaning; so that one from the Bodhisattva Grounds is subsumed within this. Consequently, the Anthology of Training does not describe the Bodhisattva Ground’s root downfall separately. |
