English

Other texts say that the buddha of “the Three Jewels” refers only to an actual buddha, and the Dharma of the Three Jewels only refers to the path of cessation, while the spiritual community of the Three Jewels only refers to a sublime being in training. This is not held to be the case here. Here, these and other downfalls are said to be “root downfalls” and “downfalls that are defeats.” It is expressed in this way because it is a defeat when the adversary that is an affliction wins now and the antidotes and vows are severed through their roots; also, it is an extremely grave fault that brings one down in the future into the lower realms. There are three defeats within stealing the property of the Buddha, and so on [1st, 13th, 14th].
