The defeat of teaching a bogus doctrine is to establish a non-Buddhist treatise while liking it, and also to bring others to this conclusion. The two misdeeds here are not to put effort into the words of the Buddha, which calls for effort, while putting effort into studying non-Buddhist scriptures. Also, while putting twice as much effort into the words of the Buddha, someone with sharp faculties who will not convert is permitted to put effort into studying non-Buddhist treatises. Yet it is said that it is a misdeed and not permitted if they do so while liking those texts. Forsaking the Mahāyāna such that it is a root downfall must be to forsake the Mahāyāna Word that teaches both the vast and the profound. It is said that forsaking the Mahāyāna such that it is a misdeed must be to teach only one of either the vast or the profound. It is also said, “Praising oneself and denigrating another.”411Candragomin, Twenty Verses on the Bodhisattva Vow, v. 16d, 167a. For praising oneself and denigrating another to be a defeat, it must be motivated by an attachment to acquisitions and esteem. It is a misdeed if the praise of oneself and the denigration of another is not motivated by attachment, but there must be either hatred or pride.
