| English | “Strong affliction” means a great degree of involvement; what comes from this destroys the bodhisattva vow. There are four faults of a bodhisattva that are like defeats; as there are four defeats for a fully ordained monastic, any of which bring them to lose their vow. Likewise, these four faults that are grounds for defeat are similar in being mere causes for losing the bodhisattva vow. For this reason they are intended to be like defeats and are known as such. Yet it is not that there is no difference between the two whatsoever, because if a monastic who is not a bodhisattva commits a defeat, the monastic vow cannot be taken again, but it can be taken again if this happens in the case of the bodhisattva vow. |
