English

The second way that something becomes a downfall is this: Here, the downfalls of a bodhisattva can be condensed into two: downfalls that were done without consideration and downfalls that were actions deliberated upon but were still inappropriate. The first is either to do something, abstain from doing something, or remain idle without having adequately considered as to whether or not it was appropriate to do. The second is to do something, abstain from doing something, or remain idle when it is inappropriate to do so, despite having deliberated as to whether or not it was appropriate to act in that way. If one misbehaves, even transgressing the accusations of an outcast’s slave, then it will be a downfall. This is stated in the general structure of the Anthology of Training.405See Śāntideva, Anthology of Training, 11b; English trans. in Goodman, The Training Anthology of Śāntideva, 18.
