You might then wonder, “So why was it composed? There is no purpose for it.” He does reveal the purpose: “I composed this treatise to cultivate the intention of the spirit of awakening, which is the principal practice of the Mahāyāna path: in order to generate in the continuum its various aspects that have not arisen, for what has arisen not to dissipate, and for it to develop further.” It was written in order to become completely habituated to the spirit of awakening, whereby its meaning will be clearly and directly realized. Texts like the great commentary show that the word composed is in the past tense, and thus that the meaning of the [17] completed composition is in his mind.80See Prajñākaramati, Commentary on the Way of the Bodhisattva, 44b.
