| English | Some commentaries also say that there are two approaches taken in the composition of treatises: one that emphasizes the beauty of the text by focusing on literary style, and another approach that emphasizes disciplining the mind by focusing on what is beneficial. Master Śāntideva focuses on what is beneficial; he did not primarily emphasize poetry and prosody. Don’t think that “even if this is the case, it lacks things like a purpose.” It has those things, including a perfect topic and a distinctive purpose, which is the purpose to benefit others perfectly. Alternatively, it is said that it does not make sense to have qualms about the treatise lacking a purpose and so on because the words are those of an accomplished master, one who sees the truth. The intent behind his saying that he wrote it for himself is also to dispel the obstacles of some arrogant scholars who will otherwise say, “You don’t need to look out for us!” Also, his invoking those with equal fortunes is to elicit faith in them and allow them to become faithful receptacles to receive the treatise. These are stated in the great master Kṛṣṇapa’s commentary.79See Kṛṣṇapa, Resolving Difficult Points in the Way of the Bodhisattva, 91a–b. |
