Following the Bodhisattva Grounds, the Ornament of the Sage’s Thought says in the context of explaining this presentation of the bodhisattva vow that, “To say that there is no taking the bodhisattva vow without first taking one of the pratimokṣa vows is not to make the Mahāyāna very troublesome.”378Abhayākaragupta, Ornament of the Sage’s Thought (Munimatālaṃkāra, D. 3903), 82a. Geshé Sharawa says in his Stages of the Path that the Bodhisattva Grounds says that the seven types of pratimokṣa vows are the discipline of restraint, but it does not say that the bodhisattva vow is not taken without first taking one of them. If it were the case that it was not taken, then, since the bodhisattva vow is not taken without the aspirational spirit, a question is asked as to whether the person is a bodhisattva and makes the aspiration for awakening. In the same way, it would also be reasonable that a question is asked as to whether they had the pratimokṣa vow because both would be equally indispensable for the bodhisattva vow.379See Shang Sharawa Yönten Drak, Shang Sharawa’s Stages of the Path, 161–62. See also the Discipline chapter in Asaṅga’s Bodhisattva Grounds for the ritual for bestowing the bodhisattva vow where the question about being a bodhisattva with the aspiration to awakening is asked but not a question about having the pratimokṣa vow. English trans. in Engle, The Bodhisattva’s Path to Unsurpassed Enlightenment, 262. Thus it is not determined in Asaṅga’s system that it is the case that one of the seven types of pratimokṣa vows necessarily precedes as the support for a bodhisattva.
