Nevertheless, this is not claiming that it is absolutely necessary to have one of the seven types of pratimokṣa vows to support a bodhisattva vow, nor is it claiming that the bodhisattva vow and the pratimokṣa vow are not in conflict at all. If this were the case, then there would be problems of conflicting with both scripture and reasoning, as will be explained below. Thus the meaning of this passage is explained by Atiśa himself at a transition point in the commentary of the text, which says: “Now, having affirmed the demonstration[p.197]The Great Hum

of the distinctive support of the vows of discipline . . .”376Atiśa, Autocommentary on the Lamp for the Path of Awakening (Bodhimargapradīpapañjikā, D. 3948), 258a.As he said, if a beginner does not have any of the seven types of pratimokṣa vows, then between a mere bodhisattva vow and the distinctive bodhisattva vow it is stated that they do not have the fortune to take the distinctive vow. Thereby he identifies the distinctive support for giving rise to the bodhisattva vow; he does not identify what is a mere support for it. Similarly he says that there is no fortune for taking even a mere bodhisattva vow when that which is shared with the [122] pratimokṣa vows—avoiding what is reprehensible by nature—is lacking. Yet he does not say that one cannot take the bodhisattva vow when there is no genuine vow of any of the seven types of pratimokṣa.
