A sūtra says: “While I am not liberated, it is not reasonable to liberate others; while I am not at peace, I will not bring peace to others.”374I could not locate this passage. As it is said, without first restraining misconduct and gathering virtue within your own continuum, you will not be able to fulfill the welfare of sentient beings.

Śrāvaka - The disciples of the Buddha who aspire to attain individual liberation or nirvāṇa. The final goal of the Hearers is to become an arhat, a state in which one has totally eliminated the inner problems of attachment, hatred and ignorance, the main causes for rebirth in this cycle of existence. Bodhisattva - A person who seeks enlightenment for the sake of others.
