| English | Regarding the first of these, the principal factor that causes beings like myself to wander in samsara from beginningless time until now is the ignorance of coemergent or innate clinging to the self. Now, with regard to the way that this is identified, the Svātantrikas, of our own [Madhyamaka] school, say that phenomena—instead of being posited simply as they appear to undamaged minds—are established according to their mode of being. They say, in other words, that they exist truly and that the mind that apprehends them and clings to them is the innate clinging to true existence. According to our own tradition, that of the Prāsaṅgikas, if phenomena are established from their own side and are not merely cognitive imputations, they are considered to be truly existent. And the mind that apprehends and clings to them in this way is said to be the innate attitude of clinging to true existence. But all phenomena are imputed through cognitive activity or posited through its power. For as it is said in the Upāliparipṛccha, “These different blossoming flowers that delight the mind; this supreme house of gold, blazing with beauty—for all such things, there is no maker—all are posited though the power of cognition. By the power of cognition, the worlds have been imputed.” Therefore this innate attitude of apprehending and clinging to objects as established according to their characteristics either may or may not refer to the innate view of the transitory collection. In the first case, [if it does so refer,] it refers to a defiled discrimination that clings to “I” and “mine” as if they were established according to their characteristics. As the autocommentary to the Madhyamakāvatāra says, “The view of the transitory collection is the attitude of thinking in terms of ‘I’ and ‘mine.’ A discrimination that functions in such a way is defiled.” In the second case, the reference is to the innate attitude of apprehending and clinging to the basis for the definition of mine (one’s eyes and so on, and also food, drink, dwelling place and the rest, which are not included in the personal continuum) as existing according to its characteristics. In both cases, the ignorance of clinging to self, the root of samsara, is said to be innate. |
