Such remarks do no more than reveal the level of the commentator’s understanding. For in this Madhyamaka tradition, it is indeed said that the self-cognizing mind is denied, and not only on the ultimate, but also on the conventional, level. The glorious Chandrakīrti says very clearly in the autocommentary to the Madhyamakāvatāra, “However, even according to the conventional level of the world, memory that has for cause the self-cognizing mind is not at all possible.” Furthermore, if the self-cognizing mind is not denied on the conventional level, it follows that the thing that is known, the agent, and the action itself of knowing (rig bya rig byed rig pa’i las) all exist from their own side. Since there is no way to overturn this consequence, the arguments to the effect that [if the self-cognizing mind were denied on the conventional level,] one’s mind would be a hidden object for itself, or that there would be no possible evidence for the possession of a mind, or that this would do away with the conventional cognizance of extramental things—all such pointless refutations are to be rejected. But even though there is no self-cognizing mind (as stated above), it is still necessary to explain the occurrence of memory, and this must be done without mixing up the higher and lower tenet systems.
