Moreover, if the “I,” which is as if apprehended by the innate clinging to a self, were one with the five aggregates, it would follow that just as the five aggregates arise and subside, the self too would necessarily come into being and disintegrate in the same way. Now the earlier and later moments of the “I,” which thus arises and subsides, must be established as either the same or different. In the first case, if they are the same, it follows that the self of this life and the self of the earlier and later lives become a single partless whole. In the second case, if these earlier and later moments of the “I” are established as being intrinsically different, the difference would have to be one in which there is no mutual connection between them, with the result that the self of this life and the selves of previous and subsequent lives would be different from each other and unconnected. This would mean that one would encounter the results of actions one had not performed, while the results of one’s own actions would be lost. faults would ensue, how can the self possibly be one with the five aggregates? It cannot be. Neither is it tenable for the self to exist separately from the aggregates, for in that case it would necessarily follow that after every aggregate had been eliminated, there would have to be something left that could be identified as the “I.” But nothing of the kind exists.
