For those who aspire to liberation, the fact that the self does not exist inherently must first be sought. The Prajñāpāramitā-sūtra says, “Just as is the self, know all beings thus. Just as are the beings, know thus all phenomena.” And Chandrakīrti says in the Madhyamakāvatāra (6, 120), “This self is what the yogi will disprove.” And in the autocommentary to the same passage, he says, “However, at the beginning, yogis must refute only their ‘I.’ ” On the other hand, one might well wonder whether this is contradicted by the fact that in the Madhyamakāvatāra and other texts, it is the phenomenal no-self that is established first. There is, however, no fault here. It is an important key point that the refutation of the conceived object, namely, the imputed self, is a means to refuting the conceived object of innate self-clinging. On the other hand, those among our schools who accept the existence of things say in general that all phenomena exist inherently; and in particular, they think that compounded things have inherent existence (which is entailed in seeing that they arise, remain, and are destroyed). If this is completely refuted, their belief in the inherent existence of uncompounded things is automatically negated; and it is for their sake that these texts explain the phenomenal no-self right at the beginning. Here, the explanation first of the no-self of the person is done from the point of view of the Bhāvanākrama (Stages in Meditation). These two cases should be clearly distinguished. In the present instance, and on the basis of the stages in meditation, the entire meaning of the personal no-self is summarized. As Āryadeva said:
