Living beings are buffeted by the waves of karma in the ocean of samsara, deep and shoreless, filled with the rapacious sea monsters of the defiled emotions, where they are endlessly tormented by the worms of the three sufferings.[p.296]The Wisdom Chapter
Fletcher, Wulstan, and Helena Blankleder (Padmakara Translation Group), trans. The Wisdom Chapter: Jamgön Mipham's Commentary on the Ninth Chapter of "The Way of the Bodhisattva." Boulder, CO: Shambhala Publications, 2017.
For all of them, the Buddha, peerlessly compassionate, expounded eighty-four thousand sections of the Dharma as the means to lead them on the path of unsurpassable enlightenment. Among them all, the precious sutras on wisdom are supreme. These have two aspects related to the profound (view) and the vast (activities). Regarding the first, there is certainly no need to mention the gaining of the level of perfect buddhahood—even to actualize the enlightenment of the Shrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas, and to reach the citadel whence one will never again fall into the lower realms, it is certainly necessary to realize the meaning of emptiness. What need is there, moreover, to say that this view is indispensable to the generation and perfection stages—the path with characteristics and the path without characteristics—of the secret mantra? Even for the simple blessing of offerings, the wisdom of the view of profound emptiness is indispensable; and the profound and extraordinary teaching on it can be found only in the doctrine of our Blessed Lord, the Bhagavan. It will not be found in the (Sāṁkhya) doctrine of Kapila the Sage or anywhere else. For the latter has embraced a false and baneful view, whereas our Teacher discovered for himself the profound meaning of interdependence, and in his great love taught it correctly to others. So now, relying on the perfect texts and reasonings of accomplished masters, I shall expatiate briefly on the key points of the profound doctrine of dependent arising, as set forth by the Bhagavan.
