The two truths are so posited because whatever is the sphere of experience of a mind that is itself conditioned by dualistic perception is the “all-concealing” relative truth and whatever is not the sphere of experience of the dualistically perceiving mind—whatever is known or understood in a manner in which the directly perceiving mind (dualistic perception by means of direct valid cognition) has subsided—is the ultimate truth. As for the meaning of the words themselves, when one speaks of the relative, all-concealing truth, the expression “all-concealing” refers to something that obscures: it refers to that which veils or conceals the vision of suchness. Nevertheless, since it is “true” from the point of view of “veiled minds” that cling to true existence, it is referred to as “truth.” The ultimate is so-called because it is uttermost perfection, the very meaning of suchness. And it is referred to as “truth” because it is something that can never become something deceptive. Accordingly, the great Bodhisattva Shāntideva says in the root text:
