| English | Moreover, we find, in one of the Lecture Notes,66There are several sets of lecture notes (zin bris) taken by Gyaltsap of Tsongkhapa’s oral teachings. This passage is quoted from Tsongkhapa, Rgyal tshab chos rjes rje’i drung du gsan pa’i shes rab le’u’i zin bris (Lecture notes on the “Wisdom Chapter”), 92:3. that Tsongkhapa is recorded as saying that “It may be asserted, regarding the defilements posited by that path as being common to the two Shrāvaka schools,67That is, the Vaibhāṣikas and Sautrāntikas. that when, through the generation in the mind-stream of the path as was explained earlier, the manifest movement of those defilements is temporarily suspended, freedom that is the exhaustion of defilement is attained. But then it is necessary to say that, with the intention of refuting this statement, Shāntideva has to say, ‘As soon as just the manifest defilement is temporarily suspended, freedom that is the exhaustion of all impurity is gained.’”68The wider context of the Lecture Notes demonstrates clearly how Tsongkhapa creates a parallel reading of Shāntideva’s debate with the Shrāvakas. He assumes categorically that meditation on the sixteen aspects of the four noble truths can result only in a temporary suppression of defilement and then systematically adds the qualifications “merely manifest” and “for the time being,” leading to the conclusion that, even if the Shrāvakas create no karma while they are meditating on the sixteen aspects, they nevertheless fail to eradicate the underlying karmic residue that will cast them back into samsaric existence. In saying this, Tsongkhapa ignores the interpretation of the Indian commentaries, which go on to mention the Arhats with remainder. Tsongkhapa’s argument is quite coherent. The only problem, says Mipham, is that it bears no relation to what Shāntideva actually says. See Tsongkhapa, Rgyal tshab chos rjes rje’i drung du gsan pa’i shes rab le’u’i zin bris, 91–94. |
