Accordingly, even if this qualification “merely manifest” is associated only to the assertion “Your freedom should occur at once” (stanza 45b), the expression “at once” cannot be dissociated from what this assertion actually refers to: the previous statement, “If through removal of defilement you are freed” (stanza 45a). But then it is necessary to understand that this phrase really means “If through removal of manifest defilement you are freed.” And if one does not understand “through the removal of the manifest [defilement],” it is incorrect to associate the specification about manifest defilement to the idea of immediate liberation.65Mipham is here pursuing a question that he asked earlier about where Drakar is going to apply the expression merely manifest. The first two lines of stanza 45 constitute a consequential argument: If through removal of defilement you are freed, it follows that your freedom should occur at once. If the expression merely manifest is applied only to the consequential assertion, we would have If through removal of defilement you are freed, it follows that your freedom should occur as soon as you have removed manifest defilement. This is a non sequitur and can only be rendered sensible if “merely manifest” is added to the preceding conditional clause: If through the removal of manifest defilement you are freed, it follows that your freedom should occur as soon as you have removed such manifest defilement. In other words, if Drakar wants to associate the rider “merely manifest” to the consequence, he cannot avoid associating it also with the foregoing condition, thereby falling into the absurd position, referred to earlier, of debating with the Shrāvakas about something they have not said. And thus [we come back to Shāntideva’s original statement that] one is liberated as soon as defilement is removed.
