When one has grown completely used to the certain understanding that there is no self (a manner of apprehension that is incompatible with self-clinging),it will be clearly perceived that there is no self; and this will uproot all clinging to it. And whereas the mere impression of a multiplicity of elements (which are themselves no more than imputations) continues to appear within one’s continuum, the innate sense of self is no longer generated. But if Drakar insists that it must be generated 43Because the aggregates are still present.—if he means just that it is not annulled, even though there is the understanding that the aggregates are not truly existent and just belong to one’s continuum—would he then say that the Arhats with remainder are without such a state of mind?44Drakar says that ego-clinging must arise in the presence of the aggregates. But in that case, Mipham asks, would he make an exception for the Arhats with remainder, whose aggregates still continue to manifest for as long as they remain alive following their attainment of nirvana, but who (being Arhats) must nevertheless be free from ego-clinging? That is something he should examine.
