Otherwise, if what the Prāsaṅgika texts set forth were no more than the figurative ultimate, it would be necessary to say that, of the Prāsaṅgikas and Svātantrikas, the view of the latter is superior. For everyone must accept that the highest ultimate is the nonfigurative ultimate: the object of the primordial wisdom of the noble ones. And the Svātantrika texts do indeed show that this nonfigurative ultimate is the most perfect ultimate.210While Svātantrikas emphasize the figurative ultimate, as true Madhyamikas, they do not fail to propound, if comparatively briefly, the nonfigurative ultimate. See Shantarakshita, Madhyamakalankara, vv. 67–72. See also Mipham, Teaching to Delight, 113–14. Consequently, if the Prāsaṅgika texts are not talking about this same (nonfigurative) ultimate, and if they are doing no more than propounding the figurative ultimate, it would follow that for them the figurative ultimate is considered to be the highest.211The point that Mipham appears to be making here—as elsewhere in this text—is that it is through the failure to distinguish the different methods of the Prāsaṅgika and Svātantrika approaches that Drakar and his school easily fall into the trap of speaking of the Prāsaṅgika approach in ways that are more appropriate to that of the Svātantrikas. Thus, in Mipham’s view, they fail to appreciate the way in which the Prāsaṅgika approach actually is preeminent. If the Prāsaṅgikas were only to assert the figurative ultimate—which they seem to do, if one follows the Gelugpa interpretation—they would necessarily be inferior to the Svātantrikas, who do assert the nonfigurative ultimate, if only briefly. It should instead be understood that the views of the great charioteers of both Prāsaṅgika and Svātantrika with regard to the highest ultimate are indistinguishable.
