Furthermore, my opponents may say that even though the self-knowing mind is designated in terms of the conceptual distinguisher of the apprehending aspect, self-cognition is still not tenable because known object and knowing subject are not separate. But if they say this, they will have to accept that the relation of identical nature or entity (bdag gcig ’brel) has no validity on the conventional level. For the relation of oneself to oneself and the mind’s being aware of itself are similar. If the relation of identical nature is untenable, there can be no such thing as the identical nature of the two truths on the conventional level. Likewise, the realization of the object by the primordial wisdom that is free of dual appearance also becomes untenable. The reason for this is that just as, in this case, the object and the knowing subject do not appear as two, the realization of this by that (this object by that subject), or the direct perception of the one by the other, is equally untenable. One may say that “self-cognition” is untenable because, whichever way one examines the activity of something acting on itself, three elements appear and it cannot be regarded as a single indivisible thing. By the same token, and however one may examine it, within a mind that is devoid of apprehended and apprehender, the aspect of something apprehended cannot arise. On the other hand, if there is an apprehended object in its perception, it will not arise in a mind devoid of apprehended and apprehender.
