If this is not so, the question is: Do the upholders of the Prāsaṅgika tradition say that their mind knows itself by direct perception, or do they say that it does not know it? If they say that it does, then it must know it by either self-illumination or else through a process whereby the known mind and the knowing mind are two separate substances. If they affirm the first of these alternatives, the self-knowing mind is established. If they affirm the second, the mind-to-be-known must be cognized either by a mind that is simultaneous with it or by a mind that occurs later. If the knower and the known are not simultaneous, it will be necessary to demonstrate how there can be a direct cognition of an object that is no longer present, and whether the outward-facing mind and the inward-facing mind arise alternately or not, and so on. On the other hand, if the knower and the known are simultaneous, who or what is it that knows that these two minds are present? If they are not apprehended, it will not be correct to say that they exist. This is what the teachings say.
