Why is this? The mind that experiences an object such as blue is indisputably established for everyone. By contrast, a second mind that experiences the mind apprehending the blue has no existence even on the conventional level.199In simple terms, when an object is encountered, a consciousness that apprehends it arises and the object is known. But how is this object-apprehending consciousness itself known? If a second consciousness were required for this to happen, the result would be a regress to infinity, and no knowledge would be possible. Therefore a “second consciousness” is refuted even on the conventional level; it has no existence whatsoever. For knowledge to happen, it is the first consciousness, the blue-apprehending consciousness, that must be self-illuminating, or self-knowing. On account of its experiencing blue, the consciousness is called the “blue apprehender” and consequently at a later moment when one remembers the blue, it is proper also that one remembers its knowing subject, namely, the apprehender of blue. For at the time when the sensation occurred, the subject and object occurred together, so that when the memory occurs at a later stage, one will recall the knowing subject that was connected with the object by virtue of the fact that they are within the same mind-stream. All this is only according to the unexamined conventional reality of the world. If they are examined on the ultimate level, no experience and no memory will be established. The meaning therefore of the refutation through such arguments is that whereas the mere apprehender of blue as the knowing subject exists, the subsequent knowing or experiencing of blue by another, separate apprehending aspect has no reality even on the conventional level.
