| English | Yes, this is exactly right. Even though there is no [truly existent] self-cognizing mind, the way in which memory is produced cannot but be on the conventional level. It is true that the argument constructed in this way gives the impression that the self-cognizing mind is being refuted on the conventional level. In fact, it is refuted on the ultimate level; it is impossible for it to be refuted on the conventional level.198In the passage in the root text (Bodhicaryāvatāra, chap. 9, v. 23) where the example of the bite of the poisonous rat is used, it seems at first sight that what is being refuted is the psychological experience of self-cognition. Experiences of this kind are necessarily part of human transactions on the conventional level, so if this is the purpose of the water-rat example, then it would indeed be a refutation of self-cognition on the conventional level. But if one looks more closely at the context, one can see that the purpose of the example is not to call into question self-cognition as an experience on the conventional level, but rather to undermine the Cittamātra tenet that the self-cognizing mind is truly existent and that it therefore constitutes an ultimate truth. |
