There are other cases where, even though things are established by direct perception, their identity is not acknowledged. Although they see that an ox is in itself devoid of the universal, the followers of Kanada, who are mistaken in their understanding, say that it does nevertheless possess the universal.195For the Nyāya-Vaiśeṣika school, universals and their instances are separate entities. It is the coincidence of individuals with their universals through a relation called “inherence” (samavāya) that makes things appear as individual whole entities as distinct from mere collections of parts. See Dreyfus, Recognizing Reality, 57. And although feeling is experienced by the self-cognizing mind as having the nature of consciousness, the Sāṁkhyas and others say that it has the nature of matter.196According to Sāṁkhya theory, the experiences of pleasure, pain, and so forth, are modulations of prakṛti, which is material, and not of the puruṣa, which is conscious. Likewise, the non-Buddhists also say that it is impossible for the mind to cognize itself—on account of which, the question whether or not the self-cognizing mind exists on the conventional level is to be settled by reasoning. There is absolutely no point in trying either to prove or refute it on the basis of scripture alone.197Appeal to the authority of Buddhist scriptures is useless in debates with non-Buddhists.
