of both object and subject, what has happened to the absence of dualistic appearance? If this just means that the duality is not perceived, even though it is in fact there, it follows that the mind will not realize the nature of its object as it really is, for there will be no correspondence between the way the thing really is and the way it is perceived.165The essential weakness in Drakar’s position, according to Mipham, is the failure to distinguish between the ordinary mind of unrealized beings, which necessarily cognizes objects in a state of subject–object duality, and the nondual wisdom of the Āryas in meditation, which transcends this duality and which can therefore cognize (for it is of the same nature) the ultimate truth beyond all ontological extremes. Drakar insists that the ultimate is the object of the mind, in other words that, even when it is realized, it remains the object of a cognizing subject. But if a subject–object duality persists, it follows, according to Mipham, that the mind is at odds with (and therefore cannot cognize) what it is attempting to identify. For, in Mipham’s view, the ultimate transcends the four extremes and cannot be an object of cognition in the ordinary sense. If the mind that cognizes the ultimate truth does so within the mechanism of subject–object duality (a characteristic of the mental functioning of ordinary beings), the “ultimate” in question can only be, according to Mipham, a mental image (a mere idea of the ultimate, and not the thing itself) cognized dualistically on the conventional level. Such an understanding of the so-called figurative ultimate (rnam grangs pa’i don dam) does indeed have its uses, and is indeed as much as the mind can manage while still on the paths of accumulation and joining. But to emphasize it, clinging to a notion of conventionally valid cognition, is characteristic of the Svātantrika, not Prāsaṅgika, approach.
