Thus far is the statement of Drakar’s polemical attack.163It is worth noting that in rejecting Mipham’s interpretation of this stanza of the root text, Drakar is also diverging from the position of Prajñākaramati. See Oldmeadow, “Study of the Wisdom Chapter,” 53. I will now reply to what he has said in order to demonstrate that it in no way weakens my position. In [Drakar’s] explanation of the distinction of the objects of the dualistic and nondualistic mind, there is, I grant, no fault. Whereas I have followed the explanatory method of the earlier tradition, which follows the wording of the text just as it is,164That is, the Bodhicaryāvatāra. In the Ketaka Jewel, Mipham speaks only of “the mind,” not “dualistic mind,” even if this was what he intended. There was, in other words, no cause for Drakar’s indignation, since he and Mipham are in agreement on the essential meaning. unmodified, this other way of explaining it agrees with it in all essential points. No fault is incurred here in each one expressing his own opinion; and I do not see that either position can be faulted by correct reasoning. Since both positions are essentially in agreement, it goes without saying that for both traditions, there is, on the conventional level, a mind that realizes the ultimate. This mind, according to both traditions, has moreover the specific feature of being nondual. This being so, if the mind that directly realizes the ultimate were to be assessed in terms of its own mode of being, then—given that [at that level] there is neither an appearing aspect of the object nor an aspect of the mind related to it—it is evident how difficult it is to envisage, in conventional terms, a mind in which all mental elaboration has been stilled.
