Of course, if when examined with the kind of investigation that aims at the ultimate status of things, something were found to exist from its own side—even if it were no more than an atom—it would certainly be truly existent. But from the point of view of reasoning aiming at the ultimate, the Svātantrikas do not in fact accept phenomena established from their own side. If they did, they could not be Madhyamikas. They would not even be on the path of liberation!18In other words, it is a mistake to imply (as Drakar does) that the Svātantrikas are substantialists. Care needs to be taken with this passage. To say that the belief in the real existence of something (something that can withstand ultimate analysis) disqualifies one from the ranks of the Madhyamikas is clear enough. To say that it disqualifies one from the path of liberation, however, is less obvious since it implies (if taken at face value) that the advocates of lower tenet systems cannot attain liberation, a position that is explicitly denied later on in Mipham’s discussion of the realization of the Arhats (see Questions 3 and 4). It is clear therefore that “the path of liberation” in the present context is to be understood broadly as “the Buddhist path.” It is not a reference to the specific question of liberation from samsara.
