And if they are established in the manner just asserted, that is, according to their nature, it definitely follows that phenomena are established truly.17This conclusion (that if things are not mental imputations, then they are truly and substantially existent) follows if, and only if, one makes a unilateral appeal to ultimate valid cognition and applies it on the conventional level. But this is precisely the mistake that Mipham is opposing. Conventional appearance is mind imputed and mirage-like only from the point of view of ultimate valid cognition. From the point of view of conventional valid cognition, genuine things exist according to their nature (unlike figments of the imagination, hallucinations, or mistaken perceptions, which are invalid for sane and healthy people even on the conventional level). |
