| English | [The reason why realization in the Mahāyāna takes such a long time] is not that the Bodhisattvas do not have the desire to gain realization quickly. For there is no Bodhisattva who does not also wish for the manifest wisdom of the path of seeing in this life. Neither is it because the Bodhisattvas’ efforts are meager, for it is written that even with supreme effort, an immeasurable kalpa is necessary. The differences of wisdom and the accumulation of merit are the causes of the excellence of the Great Vehicle and of the speed of the process of realization. It goes without saying therefore that it is not a cause for their being slow!150In the sutra vehicle of the Mahāyāna, it is said that for beings of highest capacity and endeavor, enlightenment requires the labors of three immeasurable kalpas. For those of moderate capacity, seven such kalpas are required, while for Bodhisattvas of lowest capacity, no fewer than thirty-three kalpas are required. |
