Furthermore, if one succeeds in internalizing correctly the meaning of the perfection of wisdom, namely, emptiness beyond all elaboration—which, as the essence of the utterances of the Tathāgata, is like a priceless jewel—one will be able, by that fact alone, to assimilate all the teachings, whether brief or long, of the entire Dharma. It is said that one will gather all the qualities of the path and result, which are limitless like an ocean: the powers of memory, meditative absorptions, and preternatural knowledges; great compassion, the transcendent virtues, the grounds of realization, the skill in means that resides in neither extreme, and so on. So if it is right to say that through the mere presence of such a realization in the mind-stream, all these things are gathered, it would be right to conclude that if the Shrāvakas have such a realization, they possess all those qualities as well—and there is certainly no need to talk about merely understanding the various arguments that establish suchness. But compared with the Great Vehicle, the power of the Shrāvakas is meager. Their accumulations are of a lower order, and in their scriptures, access to the reasoning that produces the understanding of suchness is not developed. As a means of liberating themselves from samsara, they strive earnestly in the realization of no more than the personal no-self.[p.259]The Wisdom Chapter

So how is it that although they do not strive in emptiness as this is taught in the Great Vehicle, they are able, in such a short space of time—two or three lives and so on—to realize directly the final truth of things—whereas those who have a full complement of the excellent qualities that the Shrāvakas do not have, and who, having sharp faculties, have entered the path of the Great Vehicle, are able to realize the truth only after one immeasurable kalpa? And now that we have asked Drakar Tulku and the Gelugpas this question, let them give us their confident answer loud and clear!
