If, according to the different conceptual aspects of a single knowledge object, various knowledge objects were detected through numerous valid cognitions, one after the other, it would be impossible for valid cognition ever to cognize even a single knowledge object. For, since there would be an infinite regress of the valid cognizers, it would be impossible to understand what is to be known.148If in order to cognize something, the valid cognition must be validated by yet another valid cognition, there would be no end to the process. One would fall into an infinite regress, and it would be impossible to account for the cognition of anything. The same would apply to the arguments that establish emptiness. If each argument required validation by another argument, the procedure would be endless. It is just as when, thanks to the evidential sign of smoke, one has definitely ascertained that there is a fire on a mountain pass, no (new certainty) is generated different from the one before—even if one subsequently receives trustworthy reports of the fire. Therefore, with regard to the direct vision of the truth, how could a realization that is better or worse, complete or incomplete, occur on the basis of a greater or smaller quantity of arguments, all of which are productive of realization? Once a fire has been seen directly, the mind that overcomes any misconceptions about it is not improved or worsened through the cognition or otherwise of many signs that establish its existence. It is exactly the same in the present case.
