| English | If its name and its defining characteristic are separated out, one will find that, in the case of an actual thing called “fire,” no defining characteristics other than being hot and burning will fit it. Consequently, they (the thing, its name, and defining characteristics) coincide; and it is very important to understand that within the thing itself, they are not different.13Largeness or smallness, for example, may be characteristics of a fire, but they are not defining characteristics, since the fire can perfectly well be either the one or the other. Heat and the capacity to burn, however, are defining characteristics, since no fire can exist without those properties. In other words, things may be “separable” from many of their characteristics but not from their defining characteristics. As will be seen later, “established according to nature or characteristics” is a characteristic, but not a defining characteristic, of conventional phenomena, since the ultimate status of these phenomena is precisely the lack of such a qualification. To put it another way, one could perhaps say that existence “according to characteristics” establishes what phenomena are but not that they are. |
