| English | When it is said that “Things are established according to their own characteristics,” it should be understood that the expression “own characteristics” is used in three ways. First, in the sense known to logicians, the defining characteristic of a thing is said to be its causal efficiency. Second, in the Abhidharma and elsewhere, when a defining attribute is attached to the name of a thing (as in the case of heat ascribed to “fire”),12That is, mtshon bya. Sometimes this term is rendered misleadingly by the Latin gerundive definiendum (that which is to be defined), which would normally refer to the definable thing itself. By contrast, the Tibetan term mtshon bya refers to the name, not the thing named. The defining characteristic (mtshan nyid) is that which defines the name (mtshon bya), and the basis, or locus, of the definition, or defining characteristic, is the specific object. this is said to be the thing’s “own characteristic.” Finally, in a Madhyamaka context, when the nature (ngo bo), or character (rang bzhin), or defining characteristic (mtshan nyid), of something is able to withstand analysis when investigated with a view to its ultimate status, the thing in question is said to be “established according to its characteristics.” But these three cases all converge in the sense that the characteristic to be examined (whether it is established or not) is never something separable from the nature of the (actual) thing in question. When the Svātantrikas explain that a phenomenon is “established according to its characteristics,” they are only applying the expression to the actual thing on the conventional level. Conventionally, fire, which performs the function of being hot and burning, is established as possessing the characteristic of being blazing, red, and hot. With regard to that, the simple nature of the thing as it appears—without distinguishing the aspects of its name, defining characteristic, and so on—is called its “own nature.” |
