The noble masters, Nāgārjuna and his spiritual sons, declare in their reasoned arguments that the Shrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas also have the realization of the emptiness of what is dependently imputed. They say too that if the Shrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas did not understand that whatever is dependently imputed is empty in being without intrinsic existence, they would have no means of realizing the no-self of the person, and without this they could not be liberated from samsara. that one can correctly understand the meaning of the teaching regarding the enlightenment of the three vehicles,130That is, the results of the Shrāvaka, Pratyekabuddha, and Bodhisattva vehicles. arising from the realization of emptiness.131It is said in the Praj āpāramitā sūtras that the realization of all the vehicles derives from an understanding of emptiness. Even those who aspire to the level of Arhat must “train in the perfection of wisdom.” According to the Nyingma view, this means training in the perfection of wisdom, the view of emptiness, as appropriate to the Shrāvaka vehicle: that is, the emptiness of gross extended phenomena (the aggregates), which produces the realization of the personal no-self. Once again, Mipham’s opponents claim that, in order to gain liberation, the Arhats must have mastery of the perfection of wisdom as expounded in the Mahāyāna—a claim that Mipham considers unfounded and absurd.
