| English | Nevertheless, it is taught that the Shrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas abiding by the result are unable to realize emptiness in the sense of the baselessness of all phenomena, as one finds in the Mahāyāna. And although the two partless entities spoken about in their tradition may be dismantled through mental analysis, the Shrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas still accept the existence of a multiplicity of entities, and they have no arguments to show the necessity of realizing that they are unreal. Thus there is nothing contradictory in asserting the existence of this lower path, wherein the no-self of phenomena is not completely realized. For it is demonstrated by scripture and reasoning that, even though it does not lead to the complete realization of the phenomenal no-self, it does, as a path, lead to the accomplishment of a result. It is therefore established that a realization of the unreality of certain coarse phenomena and of the no-self of the person may be elicited simply by the path of the Shrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas. Nevertheless, the complete realization of a vaster no-self cannot be achieved by those who enter this lower path. For they do not possess in their entirety the conditions of the supreme path (outer and inner teachers and so on),129“Outer teachers” are actual masters of the Mahāyāna; “inner teachers” are wisdom and compassion proper to the Mahāyāna. and it is unreasonable to suppose that the results of such a path should arise in them spontaneously and without effort. It is in the Great Vehicle that the two no-selves are extensively taught; and because this and all the other aspects of the path are complete therein, the extraordinary fruit of all that is to be abandoned and all that is to be realized is achieved. Who were the ones in the cool land of Tibet who made this distinction? It is by reading each of the writings they left behind that they may be identified and dearly cherished. |
