As was explained above, the reasoning that demonstrated that the Shrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas possess a simple realization of the emptiness of dependent phenomena125That is, gross phenomena that appear in dependence on their constituent parts. is able to show that the five aggregates, which are in fact composed of partless instants of consciousness and particles of matter, are like bubbles and foam and so on. And although the Shrāvakas accept that the gross phenomena may be broken down or dissipated by mental analysis, and therefore have only a relative existence, they do not say that they are empty.126In the sense that even the partless particles do not exist. In the present context [that of the “Wisdom Chapter”], the reasoning that shows that to say that something is dependently imputed is the same as saying that it is empty is able to overturn as baseless the Shrāvaka school’s rejection of emptiness.127As expressed in Shāntideva, Bodhicaryāvatāra, chap. 9, v. 40, p. 143. In Madhyamaka, dependent arising and emptiness are mutually entailing. They are, to all intents and purposes, synonymous.
