| English | The twofold classification of the ultimate into the nonfigurative and figurative is elucidated in the great Indian treatises, the Svātantrika texts, and so on.7See, for example, Bhāvaviveka in his Tarkajvālā. The nonfigurative ultimate, which is free from all assertions, is what appears as the sphere of the meditative equipoise of the Āryas. The figurative ultimate is what appears to their ascertainment in postmeditation. The former is thus the sphere of primordial wisdom, while the latter is the sphere of the ordinary mind. And the Madhyamikas8“Madhyamikas” is presumably meant in a general sense, namely, anyone who accepts the Madhyamaka tenet system. It is not a reference to the authors of the great Madhyamaka treatises, be they Svātantrika or Prāsaṅgika. These texts were composed, in Mipham’s view, as expositions catering pedagogically to the needs and capacities of disciples. They therefore reflect the view and capacity not of their authors but of their intended readers. may adopt different approaches according to their mental capacity.9In all probability, this last remark refers not merely to the division between the Prāsaṅgikas and the Svātantrikas but also to the various Svātantrika subschools, higher and lower, as these are classified in the tradition. The higher Svātantrikas are divided into those who interpret the relative truth in the manner either of the Sautrāntika (mdo sde spyod pa’i dbu ma pa) or of the Yogācāra (rnal ’byor spyod pa’i dbu ma pa) tenet systems, as represented by Bhāvaviveka and Shāntarakshita, respectively. Numerous other interpretations are found among the lower Svātantrikas. See Jigme Lingpa and Kangyur Rinpoche, Treasury of Precious Qualities, book 1, appendix 3, pp. 413–17. |
