One may accept that the coarse aggregates are simply without substantial being. Nevertheless, as long as one clings to the true existence of the basis of imputation, which has the nature of the partless particles, one does not have a perfect understanding of the no-self of the phenomena in question. Consequently, even if one realizes that there is no coarse substantiality in the pot, it will not be said that one has realized the pot as being “without self.” In the same way, although one may just realize the coarse no-self of a person—that is, the absence of a permanent self and so on—this will not amount to the realization of the personal no-self.117That is, one also needs to have an understanding that the aggregates themselves are imputed on constituent collections of smaller entities. We should notice however that the ontological status of the partless particles is not in question here. The reason for positing them is simply to demonstrate the essential point that the aggregates are composite. That the particles themselves are also baseless imputations is, for the time being, of no importance. It is rather on the basis of the understanding that the coarse aggregates themselves do not form single whole entities, but are just imputed on manifold collections, that one will come to a perfect realization of the subtle no-self of the person: the realization that the personal self is without intrinsic being. And it should be understood that one will be able to assimilate the fact—decisively shown by the reasoning based on the seven aspects of a chariot—that the conceived object of innate clinging to self is no more than an imputation, a label: it has not the slightest existence in itself. Similarly, and again on the basis solely of the reasoning of the seven aspects of a chariot, one is able to understand fully that the “I” is also without intrinsic being. It is just a label imputed to the aggregates, which themselves have the nature of plurality and impermanence. And this one can understand right now from one’s own experience. Consequently, if through the use of reason, one comes to an understanding[p.246]The Wisdom Chapter

of this and then grows used to it, an utterly perfect, vivid experience of it will normally arise, and this is the ultimate thing to be realized. It will be like seeing the aspects of the [four] truths, impermanence and the rest, directly. When one sees this and grows used to it, how will even the innate ego-clinging not be eliminated? If it is not eliminated, the same will apply also to the realization of the absence of real existence.
