to be eliminated and the manner of elimination. For until the defilements together with their seeds are eliminated, the habitual tendencies of the veil of defilement—in other words, the cognitive veils—cannot be even slightly removed. For example, until the oil that has fallen on a piece of cloth has been completely taken away, the stain on the cloth made by the oil cannot be removed. As the autocommentary to the Madhyamakāvatāra says, “It is just like detecting the slight residual quality in a vessel or cloth, even though the sesame oil, flowers, and so on have been removed from them. Similarly, even though the defilements have been eliminated, the habitual tendency remains.” There are many explanatory scriptures to this effect.
