It is also said in the commentary to the Yuktiṣāṣṭika, “Even though they focus on the nature of form and the other aggregates,111Mipham’s contention had been that the root of samsara is clinging to the aggregates as if they formed a single entity that could serve as a support for clinging to the personal self. The Shrāvakas gain liberation, he says, through dissolving such clinging by focusing on the nature of the aggregates as impermanent and manifold. In response, Drakar cites the Yuktiṣāṣṭika, which he understands as meaning that even though the Shrāvakas focus on the nature of the aggregates—as impermanent and manifold—this is still not sufficient for them to dispel defilement. Therefore, in Drakar’s view, the Shrāvakas do not gain liberation from samsara by such means. They must have a full realization of the emptiness of the aggregates, that is, the emptiness of their constituent partless particles. Of course, it is natural that Drakar should think in this way since, in the Gelugpa account, clinging to true existence is considered to be an obscuration of defilement. for those who wish to eliminate the defilements, the elimination of the defilements is not possible.” And so on. It is not tenable because the refutations of both scripture and reasoning cannot be invalidated. Moreover, the way Mipham interprets the clarification given in the autocommentary to the Madhyamakāvatāra does not accord with its intended meaning. For, in harmony with what the autocommentary said earlier, it is through focusing on the nature of form and the other aggregates that one is mistaken. The realization of the personal no-self does not occur because of [the Shrāvakas’] focusing on the aggregates as the basis of the imputation of self. As the Ratnāvalī says, “As long as there is clinging to the aggregates,” and so on. This and other texts clearly say this.
