Lord, so it is. The Arhats and Pratyekabuddhas still have something remaining that is subject to birth. Lord, they have not exhausted the propensity to birth. . . . Lord, there are two kinds of death. And what are these two? There is the death that is the termination of one’s continuum and there is the death that is an inconceivable dedication.84It is said in the Abhidharma that an Arhat with remainder has power over his or her life. If the state of arhatship with remainder is to last for a long period and if the Arhat in question is living in a situation where no particular benefit to beings and the Doctrine is possible, he or she may decide to die, “dedicating” the rest of the state of arhatship with remainder to another incarnation in more propitious circumstances. The Arhat will take rebirth and continue in life until the karmic residue is exhausted and arhatship without remainder occurs. Lord, the death that is the termination of one’s continuum is the death of beings who have the propensity for further birth. Lord, the death that is through an inconceivable dedication pertains to Arhats, to Pratyekabuddhas, to Bodhisattvas who have power over birth and to those who subsist in a mental body. This is how it is until the essence of enlightenment is reached. . . .With regard to the first kind of death, a consciousness arises in the Arhats and Pratyekabuddhas with the thought “I have exhausted all propensity to birth. . . . ” Lord, there are two kinds of defiled afflictions. There is “defilement of the ground of abiding” (gnas kyi sa’i nyon mongs pa) and “active, manifest defilement” (kun nas ldang ba’i nyon mongs pa). There are four kinds of “ground of abiding”—the ground of abiding in the single view (lta ba gcig la gnas pa’i sa) and so on. And of these four, the ground of abiding of ignorance is the most powerful. The wisdom of the Shrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas is unable to destroy it; it can be overwhelmed only by the primordial wisdom of the enlightenment of the Tathāgata. . . . Lord, the ground of abiding of ignorance is extremely powerful. For example, Lord, the three worlds of existence all arise from the[p.230]The Wisdom Chapter

force of defiled actions through the circumstance [of the interdependent link] of grasping. And likewise, Lord, the mental bodies of the Arhats, Pratyekabuddhas, and Bodhisattvas who have the power over birth all arise through the condition of the ground of abiding of ignorance and from a cause that is undefiled action. . . . Lord, those who distinguish between good and bad are not those who go beyond suffering. On the contrary, Lord, it is only those who have the primordial wisdom of equality who attain nirvana.
