How, on the other hand, is one to understand the present opinion that it is defiled? The words “Why should they not have” are connected with the preceding words “This craving . . . is not defiled” and necessarily reveal this meaning. Moreover, having specifically said that although “This craving [in the mind-stream of the Arhats] is not defiled,” Shāntideva gives [undefiled] ignorance as an example of it and then says, “But why should they not have [a craving of the same kind]?” This being so, one can definitely understand him to mean, “But why should they not have an undefiled craving?” |
