Now it will be objected that this is incorrect and that the words “This craving . . . is not defiled” only refer to the fact that the [craving of the Shrāvakas] does not have the defilement induced by the kind of ego-clinging that grasps at an independent, substantially existent self. On the other hand, our opponent interprets the words of the text as meaning “Why should they not also have the kind of craving that is induced by the view of the transitory collection, which clings to the self of the person existing according to its characteristics?”75When Shāntideva says, “But why should they not have a craving that is like their ignorance,” the Gelugpas resist the obvious conclusion that, in Shāntideva’s view, there exists such a thing as a craving that is undefiled. As previously stated, their own argument is as follows: “True, the craving of these Shrāvakas is not defiled by clinging to an ego considered to be permanent and substantial, but why should they not have a defiled craving that derives from clinging to a self considered to exist intrinsically from its own side, as mentioned in the Prajñāpāramitā sūtras?” Mipham considers this interpretation to be extremely far-fetched and difficult to reconcile with Shāntideva’s prima facie meaning, especially in view of the points that he then goes on to make.
