“Alas!” cries Shāntideva. Beings wander continuously from one sorrow to another. Even though they are in intense torment, they do not see that they are foundering in suffering, and they cherish and cling to this existence. Alas, how can one not lament at the thought of their being carried away on the flood of pain? For example, if one were to see a man who, wishing to feel cool, bathed himself repeatedly, and who, wanting to be warm, placed himself again and again amid fires, thus going back and forth repeatedly, one would think, “The poor man! How pitiful this is!” In just the same way, beings remain in a state of extreme suffering, and yet, drawn on by their cravings, they claim that they are happy! So it is that they relax and play and take their ease, as if old age and death will never come to them. Yet, first they will be slain by the pitiless and inescapable Lord of Death and then will come the unbearable sorrow of falling into the lower realms.
